What is the P.E.N.S. device?
P.E.N.S. stands for percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. This neurostimulation device is a type of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (T.E.N.S.) that is delivered through the skin using thin needles instead of adhesive pads.
Who can benefit from P.E.N.S.?
There are many who can benefit from P.E.N.S. including patients with:
- chronic pain
- neuropathy/neuropathic pain
- cervical and lumbar pain (neck, spine, back)
- osteoarthritis
- opioid withdrawal
It may also be effective in relieving pain associated with cancer, fibromyalgia, and nerve injuries. Note that this treatment is covered by Medicare and many insurances.
How does it work?
This is a type of non-invasive treatment that helps manage pain through electrical stimulation. It is placed behind the ear using small needles or electrodes. The P.E.N.S device delivers low-voltage electrical current to specific points on the body. The stimulation is used to block the transmission of pain signals to the brain and by activating the body’s natural pain-relieving mechanisms.
